Hmm, that sounds like a corrupted GS.OS file as you already have supposed.
Have you tried some disk repair like ProSel-16, Deliverance or Universe Master
to check out the directory structure ? Maybe even your original GS.OS file is bad.
Try to get a new one (via ftp from ftp.apple.com).
I had a bad GS.OS file once, too. ProSel, e.g., discovered that with a
"blocks used" or "blocks free" message.
