Re: Repost: can't get hard drive to boot GS/OS
Further to my previous posting on this topic, I just noticed this
rather interesting text in the System 5.0.4 release notes:
"5.0.4: Known bug: The SCSI Manager asks peripherals to reutrn 256
bytes of status into an 8-byte buffer in the middle of the code. Most
hard disks only return 8 bytes, but some peripherals return more,
overwriting some Manager code and crashing during boot. This is not
fixed in 5.0.4." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(emphasis mine).
If your drive is one of the ones that returns more than 8 bytes, then
as soon as SCSI.MANAGER or SCSIHD.DRIVER is loaded, the system will
crash.
To test this theory, take another copy of System 5.0.4 from your hard
drive onto a 3.5" floppy, and remove SCSI.MANAGER and SCSIHD.DRIVER.
If the disk now boots OK, the problem is at least narrowed down to the
SCSI drivers.
I think this bug has been fixed in System 6 (no specific mention of it
in the release notes, though), so using System 6 instead of 5.0.4 may
solve your problem.
