Yup, that seems to be the way to go.  Residue from comp.sys.apple is annoying
enough, I would hate to see comp.sys.apple2 end up in the same boat.  There
is, I believe, a similar situation in the Mac groups, too - comp.sys.mac.app
does not "exist", but you can post to it and people do (and get lots of
messages saying "you can't post here").

Incidentally, there is a toasted newsgroup listed on my server called 
comp.unix.appleIIgs, I'm not sure how it got there, but it sure it
confusing.
