Here's my $.02:
I posted this before, but I guess it was missed. I had a Vulcan20 and it
died. I called AE for a new 20meg mechanism, and was told it would cost
$279, plus more if the box wasn't in shipshape. I asked how much was a
Vulcan40 upgrade, and was told it was $459. Yeah, right. So I ripped
the Vulcan20 apart (hazardous voltage sticker is bogus, just don't use it
for a few hours and then stick the power cable toa liggth socket screw to
drain any remaining charge), and lo and behold there is a Seagate ST125.
I got a Seagate ST351A/X 42meg. It would only format to 20meg, but hey I
only paid $125 for it (check compuyer Shopper) and it autoparks. But
when I took my GS apart to complete everything, I built up too much
statis and shorted the power supply.
So now I type on ym Laser until my Pegasus40/Apple SCSI combo come in.
It cost about $500 total, but I can get another SCSI drive anywhere, the
Pegasus is made to be taken apart and upgraded by anyone, and I can
daisychain a CDROM or tape backup or something equally frivolous. And te
fan won't make that wwarm-up grinding noise.
shorty@blkwlf, I just saved you a 15 minute AE call ($1.50 per minute),
and 5 minute Quality Computers tech call (about $.21 per minute), and a
lot of wondering. You can do it yourself if you feel confident (I have
been ripping up //s since the early 80s and just hit bad luck). Please
stay away from Applied Engineering for hard drives. The only thing not
The only thhing covered under warranty on the Vulcan is the pretty
voltage sticker :)
