I think GIFview and Lord High GIFfer can handle GIF89a files, but
don't hold me to it.

One alternative is to use pbmplus to convert the files to GIF87a
(obviously you'd do this before downloading your pix):

giftoppm foo89a.gif | ppmtogif foo87a.gif

You'll get an error message; ignore it.
