Do you mean in GS/OS?  Under GS/OS, you may have AS MANY files open AS YOU
WANT, provided you have enough memory, of course.  I don't have the GS/OS
reference volume, so I don't know how big the I/O buffers are, but I assume
they are 512 bytes long (?)  And, MAXFILES is not an Applesoft command, btw,
it's a PRODOS command (or is that DOS 3.3?)  God, I haven't done Applesoft in
such a long time...
