ramfast 3.0 bus scan?

can anyone offer any hints or suggestions as to why my ramfast 3.0
(rev. k i think) only comes up with the message "scanning scsi bus -
this may take up to 45 seconds" sometimes?  i turn on my entire system
with one switch, and it's annoying to have to turn the gs off and then
on again after everything else has powered up, because the ramfast
didn't wait and check the scsi bus and hung because the drive wasn't
ready.

it's a quantum pro-40, which shouldn't even take that long to spin
up.....
