Finder Answers, failed follow

Finder does use the icon files instead. Your problems might relate to icon file
search order.

Finder 6.0 has a preference to prevent saving the Finder.data files. This
should work, unless it automatically converts old files. I doubt locking the
files will make a difference. The Finder.data file format changed from 5.0.4 to
6.0.

I think it tells Finder which windows are open and maybe what files are on the
desktop.
