The HP DeskJet 500 printer contains firmware which limits its use
strictly to DOS systems (RSXXX and Centronics I/O). The HP DeskWriter
printers are designed for the MAC world. To provide both environment
capabilities in the same printer would make the printer more expensive.
I'm not sure, but you can check with an HP dealer as to the availability
of DOS -> MAC (DeskJet -> DeskWriter) conversion kits.
