Under the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then select the General
control panel and make sure character translation is set to 'Standard'
(rather than 'None').

You didn't read your ZIP GS manual. If you have a ZIP installed, the
IIgs will always fail its self test. This particular test involves
timing something in a CPU loop, which the ZIP speeds up. The self-test
code thinks the CPU is counting too fast, so it assumes there is a fault.

You can get the self test to work by disabling the ZIP (set SW1-6 OFF),
turning the computer off and back on again (wait at least ten seconds
before turning it on again) and then performing the self test.
