Now I realize Thye Chean may not be able to take advantage of this, but
Andy has been teaching a compression class at GEnie.  It has slowed
down a bit due to his wanting to complete HP (can't blame him), but
it is a good class.  One of the future classes (the last I think) will
be devoted to HP.  I know he wants to discuss how to build custom
'filters' for HP (it can encode just as easily as it can compress), and
he might get into some of these tricks (don't want to put words in his
mouth).
Andy - I can't remember, can HP choose a compression scheme based upon
filetype?  For example, if it senses a MOD or an rSound, can it run
ACE instead of LZW?
