I never had trouble signing up.  Make sure you're set up like this:

* 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity
* Half duplex (local echo)

Also, if you're using an 8-bit terminal (such as ANSI, as opposed to a
7-bit terminal such as ProTERM Special or TTY), you should set your
terminal to ignore the high bit...otherwise, you'll see odd displays
(such as IBM graphics in the U#= prompt).

Finally, when you enter HHH, do NOT follow it with a Return.  Press
H three times, each about one second apart, and wait for the U#=
prompt to show up (about 1 second after the final H).
