Can't get Mac TT fonts to show up

I'm having trouble getting TrueType fonts from a Macintosh to show up
on my GS.
 
I formatted a macintosh disk on my IIgs and brought it to a friend's
house where he copied some TrueType fonts over to the disk.  When I
put the disk in my machine, the files show up in the finderas an
"unknown" file type.  What gives??
 
I'm using a GS with system 6.0 and Pointless installed.  BTW, my friend
used Fontmonger to convert some of the fonts to TrueType although I
don't
think this should make any difference.
 
I'm also wondering where I can download TrueType versions of Avant
Garde,
Palatino, and Zapf Chancery.  GEnie and cco.caltech.edu don't seem to
have them.  Any other good sites for TrueType fonts?
 
One last question.  I downloaded the TrueType version of Times from
cco.caltech.edu and the file is about 240K.  Why so big?
