rom 1 to rom 3 upgrade

Is is possible to get a rom 1 gs upgraded to a rom 3 anymore?  I asked
the dealer where the computer was bought and they more or less laughed 
at me.  

On another strange note, I'm trying to run system 6 and 5 on the rom 1
and it tells me that a rom 01 or later is needed to run the system. 
Does this mean that there was a gs prior to rom 1?
