Trashed Hard Disk
I wonder if anybody has encountered any problems with Universe Master.
I had my hard disk (which had been working perfectly for the past year)
analyzed with UM and it reported 4 errors in the root directory of my
first partition, namely on the 4 files PRODOS, SYSTEM, PRODOS. and
PRODOS.1 (yes, I'm using Taifun Boot).
I chose the default option to fix the above errors and then errors
started appearing.
1st: When I boot up, Taifun Boot crashes. I booted up from a 3.5"
system 6.0 disk and tried to delete PRODOS with the intention of
renaming PRODOS. to PRODOS but Finder 6.0 refuses to touch the PRODOS
file, giving me error $0051 (I think).
2nd: When I tried booting up again, UNABLE TO LOAD PRODOS error message
appears. I boot up from the 3.5 drive again and this time, the PRODOS
file is missing from my root directory! I seriously don't know how this
comes about. Never mind, I tried copying the PRODOS from the 3.5" disk
to my hard disk but I get the same $0051 error again and it refuses to
copy.
3rd: When I boot up ProSel from slot 5 and use the Volume Repair: Test
File Structure option on my first partition, I got 11391 errors!!!
Every single file has at least the error BLOCK FREE! The 4 problematic
files have the error BLOCK IN USE, SKIPPED.
4th: Now I can't boot up from my hard disk at all!! I can still access
the files in the first partition. I know I can do a backup and then
reformat it but I really don't have the energy to backup 32 meg of data
(I don't have enough diskettes too!) and slowly copy back every single
one again.
Would appreciate it if anybody could offer any help on this. Seems that
no software, not ProSel, not Salvation, not even UM itself would repair
my hard disk!! A low level block access with ProSel's Zap show's that
block $0002 and all the directories are still intact.
BTW, does ProSel's BLOCK FREE error mean that the file contains a block
which is marked as free in the volume bit map?
