Flakey Option characters

Just recently (withing the last three weeks) my IIgs has decided to stop 
allowing me the luxury of typing Option characters in GS/OS text applications.

I only notice for the first time a couple of nights ago, and have no idea
exactly when the trouble began. 

It doesn't seem to be a keyboard problem, since tunnelling, reverse-tunnelling, etc. all work fine, and my AppleWorks 3.0 macros all behave properly.

the only thing that doesn't work is access to the Option characters under GS/OS.
Not even Video Keyboard will display them. The unsettling thing is that I went
back to my old 800K System 6.0 boot disk (the one with no DAs) to see if the 
problem would go away, but it DIDN'T.

Can anyone shed a light on this please? It seems to me that it must be software-
related rather than hardware. I have a healthy selection of very standard NDAs 
installed, as well as Pointless (version 1.0). 

As I say, the problem is only very recent. It was certainly working normally 
at the end of November, and I have made no significant changes to my setup since
then.
