Hyper C GS patch needed (or cheap compiler for A2 or UNIX)

I just downloaded the docs for Hyper C and it says it's not compatible
with the GS.  It said that there's supposed to be a patch available
but they didn't have it.
 
Does anyone have the GS patch for this program?  If not, does anyone
know
of another program I can get cheaply either for Apple II or Unix that I
could use to learn C?  Several people have told me to stay away from
lint and cc while I'm learning, and I'm not up to investing in Orca/C
just yet.
 
Any help is appreciated.
