Not really. The hardware of the Apple // line has been upward compatible
from the year dot, and it's a snap to figure out which piece of hardware
your software is running on. So it's no big deal if you want to flip a few
softswitches or directly access the video screens.
Besides, programmers have little choice if they wish to push an Apple //GS
to it's limits. The toolbox routines are not quick enough for writing
games with smart animation, for instance. Controlling the hardware
directly is a fact of life for Apple //'s.
