Yes, djpeg works, but it takes FOREVER.  I have not successfully converted
a jpeg to a color GIF, but it works okay converting to grayscale.

I was going to suggest the same thing you did... simply convert the graphic
to a format that SuperConvert will recognize before taking it to the GS.  I
have used jpeg converters on IBM clones, and they are incredibly fast!
