GS Setup (slots)

Is there any way I can connect a modem to my system without losing
access to my printer or hard disk?  My setup is as follows:

1        Printer Port              <nothing>

3        80 Column Firmware        <nothing>                
4        Mouse                     <nothing>                
5        SmartPort                 <nothing>

Could I drop a serial card in one of my empty slots without losing access
to the functionality of the "internal" slot?
