Apple to outsell IBM, analyst says The Associated Press
BOSTON
Apple Computer Inc. will overtake International Business Machines in
sales of personal computers this year, an analyst has estimated.
Kimball Brown, director of PC hardware research for International
Data Corp., a market-research firm headquartered in Framingham,
Mass., based his estimate on the number of units shipped by each
company during the past several years.
In 1990, IBM had 12 .9 percent of the total units shipped worldwide
compared with Apple's 7.2 percent, Brown said.
By 1991, the margin had narrowed, with IBM shipping 11.3 percent of
units to Apple's 9.7 percent. That translated to 2.9 million units
for IBM and 2.5 million for Apple.
However, in the first nine months of this year, Apple shipped 2.04
million units, compared with IBM's 1.85 million, Brown said.
"The year isn't over yet," Brown said. "The question is: Can IBM come
back?"
"But even if they did, I think Apple would still come out on top."
