Most likely a different reason. In the Apple case, once sync goes away
the h-sync starts to free-run and settles down to its natural/resonant
frequency. Which I would guess is lower than the normal 15kHz and
hence more audible.
In the case of an LCD monitor my guess would be that there's an
inductor in the SMPS that is cracked or loose, and the reason it's
noisier in standby mode is because the switching frequency is changing
when the supply is under-loaded.
