This was another common failure, this gets stuck, usually at an
undesirable angle. ;-)
The stuck was the motor burning out due to the physics involved, the
weight of the CRT and the lubrication used having dried up.
Thanks for the tips! If I ever do run across one I'll be sure to be
careful when moving it.

I have a manual for one of these and when I looked it was pretty
useless except that they made a big deal out of the hand holds on the
bottom of the chasis for picking it up.

sorry, no "what to do when the servo freezes" FAQ in the manual.

It's just a geared motor with a crankshaft that "oscillates" the
CRT assembly--no servo.  Since the motor is only powered when the
button is pressed, a burnout seems unlikely (unless students have
been using it ;-).

Problems should therefore be mostly mechanical-/lubricant-related.
