(when they went bang crackle and let out foul smelling smoke) in 1x

Yes, the line filter cap (class X2 oil-impregnated, typically 0.1uF)
is a weak spot.  If you plug your machine into a power strip with
filtering, it is unnecessary.

Replacements aren't difficult, but the odor is a problem.  ;-)
