Imagine my further surprise when the same technical support folks who told me that the software was determinant NOW told me "..oh, not all devices in the software are supported by the hardware and that unit won't handle 74S PROMs". All of a sudden they DO have supported-device data. Jerks.

I'm guessing you spoke to a different person on each occasion - right?

I'm slowly coming to the realisation that in this day and age, if you want a correct and accurate answer from a vendor/manufacturer, you need to speak to 2 or 3 different people and go with the majority view. Aside from the fact that quality control (proper procedure) for support staff is non-existent, they simply don't give a sh*t about their job or the customer. So they'll sprout whatever answer they either think is right, or gets the customer off their back, without checking.

For a store like Best Buy, I expect no less than what you describe. A good shopping expedition there is one where I manage to avoid being "helped" by any of the staff.

I don't know what Advin's problem is - probably that I hadn't bought the unit from them and I wasn't worth helping unless I throw down for a current system. If this is the way they support the previous generation, I would never consider one of their products anyway.

Ended up ordering an Andromeda unit. Called and ended up speaking with one of the owners. They pride themselves on building units that can be expanded and/or repaired by the owner. How often do you see _that_?
