I had this problem as well back in the day.  I piggy-backed the zip to
a 40-pin socket and plugged the holes with solder.  It did indeed
block longer slot 3 cards, but it worked well for a decade (until one
of the solder joints was likely failing) -- so I sold it on eBay to
someone more technically capable of getting it running.  (I was afraid
I'd ruin it trying to mess with it further).  Most importantly, I was
able to get it working before my dad got home (I was in high-school at
the time).  :-D
