Yep, didn't try this because it actually isn't a VCR/DVD combo.
DVD has rca out.
VCR has coax in/out, video in/out (I believe).

I could do:
                   
antenna-->converter---(coax)----->VCR----(coax)-->tv
DVD-------------------(rca)----/

Funny I couldn't figure this setup out, but I *could* figure out how to
connect a DVR, DVD/VCR combo through a stereo system, to a tv set...
Geesh!
