To be fair, ISE is only "hideously clunky" :-)
I don't have any experience with the Altera toolchain (since I'm
something of a Unix & MacOS "fanboy") but I've heard similar things.
On the upside, much of the toolchain is UI over command tools so you
can for example, use Emacs to edit your VHDL ;-)
