Hi!

Welcome to the group of PC floppy hackers!

I did a similar design about 18 months ago, but I didn't use an FPGA, but a
simple state machine in a 2716. This was inspired because I was given a bunch
of 80-Track 5.25 disks with interesting software on them - and I could borrow
the drives to examine how they worked. To save that stuff I then redid the
controller (the old controller was a huge PCB). The new board (no PCB) fits
nicely behind the drive. I've been using my "DuoDisk 3.5" reliably for one year
now with HD Diskettes and TEAC drives.

I also wrote a formatter for 640-Block ProDOS disks and got a DOS that was
patched to handle 80 Tracks properly. The guy who did that rearranged the
Bitmap so that 100 tracks of 16 sectors fit. I'm going to put images of these
disks online in one of the next days (when I have connected the ][ and the PC
again)

You can find some photos (and a poorly scanned circuit diagram) on

Regards,
