I did a lot of printing via AppleWorks and a DeskJet (500) for a lot of 
years. I seem to recall that I set up a lot of the DeskJet information 
in AW myself so I could have access to other fonts and such.

But I do remember having problems printing to index cards (sheet fed) 
long ago. AW just didn't like the page size.

I'd have to say though, that it's been too long since I've had a working 
DeskJet to be able to actually help.

But AppleWorks did print very well to that DeskJet...
