IIGS and 5 1/4 Drive

I never owned a IIGS before , purchased one from ebay. I noticed the 5
1/4 disk drive stays on no matter what (red light is on at all times
and drives is humming). Drive reads and writes fine, but its sort of
annoying that the drive stays running (makes a lot of noise). Is this
normal behaviour? On my IIe, the same drive only comes on when its
reading and writing.
