GATE on IIgs

I recently tried playing GATE again, but I've forgotten how to do some
parts of the game:

I am totally stuck on the teleporter blocking access to the shrine of
air.

To get the treasures along the river, you must first get to the other
group of stuff to the north, by snake island.  Once you get in there,
a square of water becomes crossable and you can get to the other area.
But I can't remember how to get to the first area.

If you search by the right eye of the skull, there is a teleporter that
takes you to an island with some treasures.  But it won't show up unless
you do something else first, and I can't remember what.

Anyone have any hints?  There is a file with some hints at
http://apple2.org.za/gswv/a2zine/Docs/ but it doesn't go very far into
the game.
