They should be mono. There are no stereo connectors involved.
In fact, stereo plugs on the Apple side may cause problems. Use
a "stereo to mono" cable or adapter.
Also, is there a way to get some sort of feedback from the Apple to
see if it is seeing any signals coming off the cassette-in port? For
example, the TRS-80 had a pair of blinking indicators and one could
sort of tell what was happening during cassette input by looking at
their activity.
Here's a short loop that will "echo" the cassette input to the speaker:
300- AD 60 C0 lda $C060 ; Read cassette input
303- AA tax ; Save previous value
304- 8A txa ; Restore previous value
305- 4D 60 C0 eor $C060 ; Has it changed?
308- 10 FA bpl $304 ; -No, keep sampling.
30A- 8D 30 C0 sta $C030 ; -Yes, toggle speaker.
30D- 8A txa ; Complement the
30E- 49 80 eor #$80 ; previous value
310- 4C 03 03 jmp $303 ; and continue.
No offense, but also be sure that you are playing the output of the
PC into the Apple's cassette *input*. ;-)
