I'm using a ROM 01 Apple IIgs with 1.25MB of RAM, a CMS II SCSI card
and hard disk, and an 800KB 3.5" floppy drive. Everything was going
swell until a few days ago, when things started acting up for no
apparent reason. When I turn the machine on with no floppy in the
drive, it will sit at the boot screen indefinitely, refusing to
recognize the hard disk; however, if I boot from the IIgs system
floppy and restart from GS/OS, it will recognize the hard disk and
boot from it. (However, this only seems to work with GS/OS; booting
from another bootable disk, such as the CMS utility disk, does not
seem to encourage the computer to realize that yes, there is in fact a
hard drive connected.) Does anyone here have any idea what is going on
and how to address it, or know where I could find out?

Thanks!

If the hard drive was set up under GS/OS, then ProDOS8 probably won't be able to recognize it. OR, there is a driver on the GS/OS disk that allows it to be seen by the system. When this driver, which also runs under GS/OS, is not present, then the system doesn't know what to do with the drive.
