The whole point of Bitly is if the user receives the URL on a IIgs, that is they are in IRC and using Spectrum, or ProTERM on a telnet, whatever it may be, and desires to visit the URL, it needs to be retyped. So copy/paste it into Bitly and then retype the resulting shortend URL. Can't please everyone, even with a free donut. Goodness..
