I think there are three types of sockets.

Best - Machine pin (except for devices with thicker pins like the Zip Chip)
Good - Solder Tail Dual Wipe (the contact is visible) Poor - the sort shown in 
the right hand picture with hidden contact (no idea what they are called)

I personally would never use that last sort of socket again (especially for 
anything that was going to experience repeated insertions & removals {like the 
game port}).
