I use a home-built cradle for books so the books lays open about 30 degrees
from flat. Its face is painted flat-black so that pages are always
surrounded by black. Then, using a digital camera and a piece of glass to
press the pages flat, I can scan a couple hundred pages in half an hour.
It's the cleaning-up the images part (deskew, normalization, trimming junk
out) that I have not fully automated yet. I have a couple of interesting
Apple II books I will turn into PDFs at some point, but I tend to start too
many projects and not finish enough of them. :( OTOH, it's fun. :)
