Re: Copying a IIGS volume on a Zip Disk to a PC

I would appreciate a steer in the right direction.

As I still don't have a SCSI card yet (except the 'funny' CMS one that came with my GS), I'm trying to find a way to copy several 32 meg volumes (that I saved 10 or 15 years ago) from Zip disks to my PC. Perhaps there I could use Ciderpress to look and see what files/programs I have on these volumes.

Does the Zip not work at all with the CMS card? What is the difference between CMS and (say) an Apple SCSI card?

There are 6 volumes, 32 megs each, on two Zip disks. I copied them there using a Ramfast (when I had one).

If you had a Linux setup or possibly a Linux Live CD to boot you could add the SCSI/Zip hardware as a temporary thing and Windows would never need know about it, avoiding any reconfiguration of the Windows setup. Linux supports a large number of SCSI devices and should easily find the ZIP during it's hardware scan.

I think you could then copy the volumes using 'dd' from the Zip to a file on another disk. You might also want to place a copy of said file on a VFat formatted Zip disk for easier access from Windows.

Alternately, it is possible to use P8 formatted devices in KEGS/Linux if you know the drive info.

Now, if I insert one of the disks in a Zip drive connected to my WinXP PC, it says the disk is unformatted and offers to format it for me (of course).

This should be normal if the Zip's were formatted with the II. The PC doesn't recognize the ProDOS format. It can however recognize HFS with the proper tools.

Any suggestions on where to start or what tools to use?

There was also an IDE version of the Iomega Zip drive. I believe I may still have one around here. If all else fails I could try and recover the volumes for you provided I can locate said drive.

Cheers,
Mike T.
