I'm still only a "pretend" hardware guy myself. I'm a software guy
much like yourself, but really these hardware guys are waaay
overrated.  ;-)

Seriously, if you are unsure about dismantling hardware, you could do
what I do and take digital photo's of each step - making sure you
highlight things such as the orientation of parts and which screws go
where, etc. Then when doing the re-assembly, if you are unsure about
anything, take a look at your photo's. Make sure you take lots of
photo's so that you don't leave any details out - the age of digital
photography has a lot going for it.
