For many it was the latter. The IBM PC/AT power supply required a load resistor if it didn't have a hard disk drive or it would be damaged. I did destroy a non-IBM PC style power supply once running it without a load. Smoke and the smell of burning phenolic as soon as I switched it on. I don't know specifically for Apple power supplies, but I would try at least some load. Maybe 1A or so on the 5V line as a minimum. -- glen
