I found a satisfactory solution to keep the 5.25" format code from
moving in memory, so it's locked inside a single page.  Hopefully
that'll be the end of the 5.25" woes.

The 3.5" formatting story is a little different, though.  What state
were your 3.5" disks in when you tried to format them?  Were they
blank, PC format, HFS, or...?
