Re: Newbee Questions

Of course, a //c would also have those advantages, and also have a
built-in 5.25" (or, for the IIc Plus, 3.5" 800k) floppy drive. And,
there's always ADTPro for getting files off the web easily...

The newer the machine, the more software it can run (with some minor
exceptions.)

The IIGS can run the most software. Personally, I'd avoid ROM 00,
though - ROM 01 and 03 are better. (If the system doesn't tell you
which ROM it is when you boot it up, it's 00. You can upgrade a ROM 00
system to ROM 01, though.)

The //e Enhanced, IIe Platinum, //c and IIc Plus can run the most
software of the 8-bit machines.

The IIc Plus is the fastest machine without modification. Yes, that
counts the IIGS.

The //e (non-Enhanced) can still run much of the 8-bit software, but
not all. You can enhance a //e, though - reactivemicro sells a kit to
do so.

The ][ and ][+ are the least compatible, due to not supporting stuff
that the newer machines support, and the ][ needs additional hardware
to run as much as the ][+.

I'll note that, other than memory expansion on later versions of the //
c and the IIc Plus, the //c line isn't really expandable (yes, Applied
Engineering did do the Z80 card, but it's rather rare.) That's where
the IIGS comes in - expansion AND on-board peripherals.
