Well, good news.
I was able to find an old 16 pin PC joystick for $3! Then, I was able
to make the modification to the circuit (the two resistors and two
capacitors) inside the joystick case -- so no need for an external box
or anything that may fall apart. Finally, I cut off the 16 pin
connector originally connected to the joystick and soldered a DB9.
Works great and it looks very clean!
