Correct. I think the issue is that Tiger (and Leopard, I'd assume) dropped
EtherTalk support. Not only will my IIGS not talk directly to my Mac mini,
but neither will my Color Classic (which runs Mac OS 7.5.3, which IIRC
doesn't do AFP-over-IP, or whatever Apple calls it).
There is a workaround, though: grab one of your spare x86 boxen, throw Linux
on it, and run netatalk. Your IIGSes, your older Macs, and your newer Macs
can all log into it and share files through it.
(I suppose you could also set up your newer Macs to dual-boot Mac OS X and
Linux and boot them into Linux when you need to swap files, but I've not
tried that. If you wanted to get really fancy, you might even try something
like Mac-on-Linux (for PowerPC Macs) or VMware (for x86 Macs) to run Mac OS
X and Linux at the same time.)
