Even if the Apple uses a serial chip differnt from the 6551, it should
be possible to add serial support for the III in ADT, as long as you
have documentation about the serial chip of the III (or if you're able
to reverse engineer the relevant info).  After all, I did something
similar when I modified the Apple II side of Paul Guertin's ADT into
a version which worked with the older Apple II Communications Card.

I don't think the Apple side of ADT contains any driver layer for the
serial port - instead, the code just manipulates the serial port
hardware directly, without going through some driver.  So instead of
replacing some driver, one must figure out what part of the ADT code
to modify, and then do the needed modifications to make it work in the
new hardware environment.
