Really, it was the success of the original Famicom that pretty much
ruined Atari's chances of beating Nintendo. Nintendo revitalized the
market and gained a lot of ground with their branding over Atari,
whose last big game sold to date was, what, E.T.?! Time and time
again, it's the combination of cheap + recognizable game titles that
dominates the market.
History repeats itself... Sony kinda forgot that with PS3 and even
though they owned the world with PS2, their new hot-to-trot console
lost market share to an overclocked gamecube that was a third of the
price! :-D Likewise, the Lynx was twice the price of the original
gameboy and didn't have as many recognizable titles even though it was
technically leaps and bounds more advanced. That and its rep for
eating batteries...
