but I can't figure
out how to start a new program in Merlin,

Merlin 8?

start it,
press E to go to ed/(asm)
press A to go to editor and ADD text

Thanks, that's helping.

I've put mini manuals here in this group for Merlin.

when in editor:

apple-Q to quit to ASM
apple-X select.. move cursor. apple-X is CUT
apple-V PASTES

apple-F is find/replace text

apple-F is goto lable (or line#)

when in ASM:

ASM is assemble :-)

I use and like Merlin Pro a lot, but after years I still find that
I need to refer to the lengthy and rather disorganized manual
occasionally.

It is a powerful editor/assembler, but its syntax is occasionally
pretty weird. Seldom-used features don't stick in my memory well.
