Yes, a beefier supply could probably handle the load of the hypothetical (but
completely impractical) 12 drives.
I have had to swap out some motherboards over the years that had melted traces
from overloading... they were all Apple //e boards though, as I recall.
If the customer's warranty wasn't in effect, and they didn't want to buy a
replacement board, we'd bypass the affected slot by soldering jumper wires.
They'd lose a slot, but the //e would live on.
