Re: Question on AW3 expander that would be resolved by the manualif I could find it

Slick,

Greg's right.

Out of the box, AppleWorks 3, 4 and 5 (the absolute best, BTW <g>), have a
16,250 maximum line/record limit.

(FWIW, this stems from AppleWorks reserving about $8000 bytes (32,768 bytes)
in AUX memory to hold 16,250 2-byte memory pointers. The memory pointers are
used by the running AppleWorks memory manager (e.g. Auxslot/Slinky/GS) to
store and retrieve the lines in the actual Desktop Memory). After you have a
file with 16,250 lines/records, no increase in Desktop Memory can increase
that. When AppleWorks moves or sorts lines/records, it merely rearranges the
2-byte memory pointers in AUX memory, which accounts for its relative
speed.)

Anyway, I pulled the docs for the Applied Engineering AW 3 Expander
Software. Chapter Two states that the Expander Software can increase the
line limit in AppleWorks 3 to 23,900 lines, _UNLESS_ any TimeOut
enhancements are installed. To quote:

"Note: If you're using TimeOut enhancements the lines and records will not
be increased. TimeOut uses the extra memory for its own purposes."

I never had a reason to use the AE AW 3 Expander software. In most cases, I
would think that giving up TimeOut for an additional 7,000 lines/records
would not be worth the trade.

I have run up against the 16,250 line limit when editing some old-style HPGL
plot (.plt) files. These files typically have about ten characters and then
a 'return'. You can get 16,250 'returns' fairly quickly. At that point, I
usually retreat to ProTerm or BBedit on the Mac, muttering to myself.

In closing, to solve your problem, I might suggest installing another copy
of AppleWorks 3, without TimeOut, and then adding the AE software. AE has a
utility program that allows you to set the maximum number of lines. After
you've got it all set up, by all means, bust that file up!

Is there anything else that can use the speed of the text screen, the ability to search the file, and preferably some way to quickly navigate to various parts of the file similar to hitting Apple-4 or Apple-8? Preferably that run under ProDOS 8 because it boots much faster than GS/OS? Most Apple IIGS text file viewers run in GS/OS and use the GUI, while most Apple IIe software can't handle the large files due to the standard 128K limitation, or they only load small parts of the file, which makes moving through it take a lot more time.

I suppose I can use AppleWorks GS or ShadowWrite, but they are slower at navigating due to the graphics screen and the slow speed of my stock IIGS. The scroll bar takes the place of Apple-1 through Apple-9 quite nicely, but I was hoping for an alternative.

Remember, these are mostly text files downloaded from www.gamefaqs.com.
