There is a S.A.M. synthesis card - I have a couple stored around here
somewhere.

Yes, that's the irony--there is a hardware-assisted "Software Automatic
Mouth" and a completely software one.  ;-)

Of course, the text-to-wave transformation is the "speech" part, and
both versions do that.  The software-only version adds a software PWM
DAC for the Apple speaker.  (The card is just an 8-bit DAC with an
audio amplifier and speaker--it could be used for arbitrary sound
output pretty easily.)
